HY Space is the private mahjong house we run in central Changsha. Locals book the rooms for long afternoons with friends; we borrow them for our experiences. It is bright, quiet, air-conditioned and has a view.
Every room is a pun.
Chinese loves wordplay, and mahjong players love it most. Each room takes a lucky saying and swaps in a mahjong tile. Guessing them is part of the fun.
From 福如东海, "fortune as vast as the Eastern Sea" — with 胡 (hú, "to win a hand") in place of fortune.
From 双喜临门, "double happiness at the door" — now two West Wind tiles.
Yes, that one: 百事可乐 is Pepsi. Here it is the North Wind.
"Hard not to win" — with the South Wind sneaking in for 难 (nán, "hard").
"A hundred shots, a hundred hits" — 發 and 中 are both mahjong tiles.
