The space · 欢寓空间

A mahjong house, not a classroom.

HY Space is a private mahjong house we run in central Changsha — the kind of place locals book for a Saturday afternoon with friends. You walk in under a glowing 發, and every room is named after a mahjong pun.

Your host

Hi, I'm Jamie.

I was born in Changsha and I run HY Space. Visitors kept asking me the same questions — how do I pay for anything, what is that game everyone is playing, what should my Chinese name be? — so I started answering them properly, at a table, with tea.

Everything here is small on purpose: a few guests, a real place, and the parts of Chinese life you would not find on a bus tour.

FAQ

Good questions.

Anything else? Just ask — we reply within a day.

Do I need to speak any Chinese?

Not a word. Every experience is hosted in English, and the whole point is that you leave knowing a bit more than you arrived with.

Where exactly is the venue?

In central Changsha, easy to reach by metro or taxi. We send the exact address, a map pin and a photo of the entrance after you book — so you can show a taxi driver.

How big are the groups?

Small. Mahjong needs just 2 guests (2–4 recommended), and most other sessions top out at six. Private sessions for your group are always possible.

Are prices per person?

Yes, all prices are per person, listed in Chinese yuan (RMB) and US dollars. We can also take CAD, AUD, EUR or GBP at that day's exchange rate.

Is mahjong gambling?

Not with us. We play for points and bragging rights only.

Can I bring kids?

Yes — the Chinese name and calligraphy session is especially good for families. For mahjong, kids aged 10+ usually pick it up fast.

How do I pay?

Book through GetYourGuide, Viator or Tripadvisor once listings are live, or book directly with us and pay in RMB, USD, CAD, AUD, EUR or GBP via PayPal, Wise, bank transfer or card — or in RMB with Alipay or WeChat Pay.

What if I need to cancel?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your session. Platform bookings follow the platform's cancellation policy.

Do you offer food or cooking classes?

Not yet. Chilli-making and Changsha snacks are on our wish list — we are looking for the right kitchen first.
